Pehr Henrik Ling

Through self-discovery of daily exercise to improve his own health and the study of anatomy and physiology, Ling outlined a system of exercise and manual therapies to aid the sick and injured. He secured government cooperation and founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) to teach his techniques. Ling was elected a member of the Swedish General Medical Association and the Swedish Academy. Graduates of the RCIG could specialise in Sjukgymnastik (‘sick-exercise’) and until recently this was the title used by Swedish physiotherapists. Ling’s system greatly influenced later schools of physiotherapy and physical training around the world.
