Bolster

A bolster is a long cylindrical pillow typically made of dense material, so as to provide support. It’s history is unknown with the word originating from both Middle and Old English, being cognate of the Old English belg, “bag”. The first known use of the word “bolster” was before the 12th century.

In South East Asian countries the bolster is designed to be hugged whilst sleeping. Traditionally fashioned from bamboo it was given to a husband when he travelled away from home so he would not be lonely at night and it became known as the ‘bamboo wife’ or ‘Dutch wife’, in reference to colonialists who adopted its use.

Within physiotherapy practice the bolster is used to support and position body parts in preparation for exercise.
